Every modern vehicle carries a unique 17-character VIN, and each position carries meaning:
- 1–3, World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI): country, manufacturer and vehicle type.
- 4–8, Vehicle Descriptor Section: model, body style, engine and restraint system.
- 9, Check digit: validates the VIN is genuine.
- 10, Model year.
- 11, Assembly plant.
- 12–17, Production serial number.
